Chapter Eleven

Since his grandpa’s death, Evan had missed the old man every single day. Being at a pack party without him was a whole new kind of pain. Lenard had been so full of life. He was always at the center of every group, telling stories while everyone else hung on his every word.

There was a light missing there today.

Evan walked through the throng of people, trying his best to make small talk and act like he was interested in everything they were saying. After deciding he had mingled enough for the time being, he went looking for his cousins. If he was ever tired of people kissing his ass and telling him exactly what he wanted to hear, his cousins soon put it right. Particularly Kelly, who delighted in tormenting Evan.

He found them over by the fortune telling machine that his grandma hired every year from a carnival supplier. As a kid, the thing had always given him the creeps. It was a glass booth with a creepy wizard-looking mannequin inside. You held on to a metal rod, and it pumped out a piece of paper with a fortune written on it.

“What are you guys doing with this thing?” he asked as he approached them.

Kelly, Jared, Naomi, and Jared’s daughter were all taking turns to hold the metal rod and get their fortune.

“Aww,” Kelly said as she reached out and ruffled his hair. “You still afraid of it?”

Evan pushed her hand away and gave her a scowl.

“You two used to make me sneak out here after the party,” Jared reminded them. “Completely alone, in the dark, to come and touch it.”

Kelly snickered and turned to Naomi. “One time we turned it on right when he got close to it. He was so scared he peed his pants.”

While Jared’s daughter, Marie, laughed with her aunt, Naomi took pity on her husband.

“Aww, poor baby,” she said as she hugged Jared around his middle.

“I used to have nightmares about it,” he sulked.

“Come on, Ev, get your fortune read,” Kelly said, ignoring her little brother.

“Why the hell would I want to do that?” Evan asked. “You realize the slips of paper are on a roll. It’s the same ten fortunes recycled.”

Kelly looked down at Marie. The little girl’s face had fallen.

“Good job, Ev, way to ruin the magic,” Kelly said. “You wanna bring up Santa Claus while you’re at it.”

“What about Santa Claus?” Marie asked.

Naomi quickly put her hand on her stepdaughter’s shoulder. “Nothing, honey. Hey, you wanna go eat some more candy?”

Marie’s face lit up again, and she nodded vigorously.

“Nice going,” Jared said to Kelly as the little family left in search of candy, leaving Evan and Kelly alone.

Kelly turned to look at Evan sheepishly. “Okay, we should both never have kids.”

Evan smirked a little at that. “Agreed.”

Kelly raised her eyebrows at him. “Yeah? So you and Cole don’t want kids?”

Evan paused and thought about it for a second. “Honestly? We’ve never talked about it.”

“Never?”

“I don’t want kids, and Cole basically acts like a kid,” Evan said.
